A professional Artist, how is classified?

A professional artist, how is classified? What Makes a Professional Artist? There are numerous interpretations of what it means to be a professional artist:

  1. Some people believe a professional artist is someone who makes a living from their artwork.
  2. Others believe an artist shouldn’t have to pay fees to galleries or agents but should sell on a percentage basis. Still, some argue that a professional artist is one who sells independently and collects the full sale price.
  3. Another perspective is that a professional artist is someone who has developed a distinctive style over the years—one that is instantly recognizable, even without a signature.
  4. Others say a professional artist is someone who paints full-time and leaves all sales and representation tasks to an agent or dealer.
  5. Another common belief is that a professional artist is one who has won an impressive number of awards.
  6. Lastly, some consider a professional artist to be someone who has received formal education or professional training in the arts.

What Does “Professional” Really Mean? Let’s take a moment to define what it means to be professional: 1. It is the characteristic of a person and how they represent themselves. 2. It is someone who engages in a specific field or style of work, guided by ethical standards. 3. A professional is aware of their limitations and goals and treats others with respect. 4. A professional takes their responsibilities seriously and follows through with dignity. 5. It is someone who holds deep knowledge and understanding of their craft.

A Personal Reflection Returning to the original question—what makes someone a professional artist? In my opinion, a professional artist is someone who has developed a well-recognized personal style. They are independent and take full control of their work, paying no one a percentage. They build their own networks, maintain their own collectors, pay their own fees, and manage their own business affairs. A professional artist conducts themselves with skill, experience, and confidence—earned through years of consistent practice. While formal education and awards are valuable, they are not the only path. True recognition comes with long-term investment, discipline, and growth.
